T14-12 Outside is Not a Destination
Jill Waage, Traditional Home | Joan Craig, Craig & Co | John Cialone, Tom Stringer Design Partners | Karen Marie Stonely, SPAN Architecture | Ross Padluck, Kilgerman AD
The phrase ""outdoor living"" has always contained its own problem. It implies that outside is somewhere you go — a destination, a category, a line item in the design budget. But the most compelling spaces being built right now don't work that way. They don't transition from inside to outside. They refuse to make the distinction at all. This panel brings together designers from residential, spatial wellness, and materials practices to examine what it takes to dissolve that boundary — not as a philosophical exercise, but as a design problem with real constraints, real clients, and real Chicago winters. The conversation will move through questions of materiality, program, and how you convince a client that the best room in their house might not have a roof.
